I’d love a hot chocolate right now. I completely forgot my diet this holiday. No question. My conscience didn’t make a peep for even the most sinful choices. As I type this, I’m un-shamefully craving sticks of feta cheese wrapped in phylo pastry. Yummy.
My brother and I went to town on Homemade this year, and admittedly he beat me without contest. I was all proud of my olive tapenade (which is only called ‘tapenade’ because I love how it sounds), but it looked quite meek next to his homemade wine, lime and chili jelly, and eggplant and soya sauce spread. If you’re not a fan of eggplant, you will be after trying this spread. The soya sauce does something magical to it that is both indescribable and unforgettable.
I don’t know where I’d be if I wasn’t brought up to be open-minded about new food ideas. There’s nothing more exciting than tasting a combination of flavours your tongue has never experienced before. It keeps it from being bored – keeps in it thrilling conversation with your mind as they both try to figure out exactly what it is about this food that makes you smile. For example, I absolutely, no questions asked, irrevocably fell in love with anchovy-stuffed olives. Doesn’t sound good? I know. It took a while for me to brave it myself. But I don’t think I’ve ever tasted something so delicious before. The olives weren’t brined as harshly as they usually are, so the saltiness of the anchovies provided the main taste. So, soooo good.
And now I’m craving anchovies. And, of course, wine.
